Ironbark Down: Rain, Curry, and Cosy Vibes in the Hunter Valley

We arrived at Ironbark Down—a HipCamp near Cessnock—right as the skies opened up. With puddles forming fast and mud everywhere, we made the call to wait out the worst of it (and finish our audiobook!) before getting out to set up.

Once the rain eased, we got stuck into setting up camp and made the most of the patchy sunshine. Tonight’s dinner? A hearty lamb curry packed with veggies, garlic, and a secret ingredient: apricot jam.

We also looked back on our stay in Tamworth, where ensuite caravan sites and a sneaky oil heater from Jaycar made winter camping downright luxurious. If you’re travelling with a teardrop trailer like Tia, those ensuite setups are a game changer.

With no fire (too wet!) and plenty of wind, it was a night for snuggling into the annex, keeping warm, and enjoying the moment. Not every campsite is perfect—but they all make great stories.
