36 Degrees, Bush Guitars and a Stormy Overnighter at Kinombi Falls

It was meant to be a simple overnight stop at Kinombi Falls near Goomeri. Instead, it turned into 36-degree heat, impromptu bush music, and a lightning show rolling straight toward our camp… before we’d evenb started thinking about dinner.

A Hot Arrival

We rolled in around 5:30pm and it was still sitting at 35–36°C at 6pm.

Bush Band Bonus

Just as we were settling in, the neighbours pulled out a couple of guitars and a mandolin. One minute we’re setting up camp, the next we’re having a drink and listening to live bush music.

Not a bad way to spend a hot Queensland evening.

The sky in one direction looked… suspicious. Dark. Heavy. The kind of sky that says, “You’ve got about 20 minutes.”

The Race Against the Storm

Eventually reality kicked in.

Dark clouds. Lightning in the distance. Wind picking up.

Dinner that still needed cooking.

Luckily, fajitas are a reasonably quick Teardrop Tucker option — but cooking in gusty wind while watching lightning roll closer definitely adds a bit of spice.

At one point a leaf landed right in the middle of the chopped chicken. That’s camping.

Minimal Shelter, Maximum Optimism

Because it was only an overnighter, we hadn’t bothered setting up much shelter. Which is fine… until rain starts landing on your shoulders and you’re trying to “scooch” sideways to stay dry.

Kinombi Falls turned out to be a pretty memorable one-night stop. Heat, music, lightning and all.
